One in six Americans faces hunger or food insecurity; over 49 million people and 16 million children. That means many Americans have to choose between paying the rent and buying food.
This year FirstFruits of Washington will donate 1,000,000 apples to local food banks to provide fresh fruit to those who might otherwise not be able to afford it.
For every bag of specially marked apples sold, FirstFruits will donate 1 apple to a food bank in the area of the retailer. And the retailer also gets additional apples as part of the promotion for sale or donation.
The program also includes a “virtual purchase” alternative. For a $2.00 or $3.00 donation, a 3-pound or 5-pound bag of apples will be donated to a food bank close to the buyer’s home.
So far more than 171,000 apples have been donated.
Here’s how Harvey’s Supermarkets of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina, donated some of their apples.
